The invention relates to an item monitoring system and method which use R FID technology for the automatic monitoring of operations involving items be ing taken from and returned to one or more storage positions in a work area and which can be used to maintain an online status and use history record fo r each item. In addition, the system can automatically recognise every opera tion in which an item is taken and automatically record said operations, ass ociating the item identification data with information relating to the stora ge position thereof, the user who took or returned the item to or from the s torage position and the date and time of the operation. The system can also compile the aforementioned information in one or more databases and said dat abases can synchronise all of the information contained therein in order to manage same, report and transmit alarms, monitor the use of items, monitor t he upkeep of items (such as maintenance, calibration or replacement) and gen erate statistics relating to the use of each item. |
