A system and a method for detecting a position of a lift cage are provided to manually control the lift cage up to an emergency get off position by deciding a position of the belt even after power failure. A system for detecting a position of a lift cage(1) includes a belt(2) and a detecting unit. The lift cage is hung on the belt. The detecting unit detects a position of the belt. A first plane(2.1) of the belt has teeth units meshed with gear wheels(3A) of the detecting unit. One end of the belt is fixed at a lift path. The belt passes a pair of direction change wheels(5), a drive wheel(4), and a balance weight(6). The belt is formed as a flat belt. Various wire cables are arranged at a body of the belt. The belt winds around the drive wheel and the direction change wheels with a second plane(2.2). The second plane longitudinally extends the belt and has various wedge type ribs to reduce tension of the belt and to obtain drive capability of the drive wheel.
