An apparatus for cleaning a wall (7) of a cargo hold (8) of a ship equipped with a cleaning element (2), a suspension (3, 10) for pivotably suspending the cleaning element (2) from a carrier (4); and an operating element (16 - 18) for moving the cleaning element (2) between an operative position and a position of rest. The cleaning element (2) is elongated and the suspension (3, 10) is carried out and coupled to the cleaning element (2)in a manner such that the cleaning element (2) in the operative position is oriented in a substantially vertical direction, and, in the position of rest, is oriented in a substantially horizontal direction. A portal crane and a ship equipped with such an apparatus are also described.
