A method for controlling defrosting operation of a refrigerator is provided to accumulate operation times of a refrigerator compartment and a freezer compartment respectively for controlling defrosting period thereof separately, thereby delaying the aging of kimchi stored in the refrigerator compartment maximumly. A method for controlling defrosting operation of a refrigerator includes the steps of accumulating operation times of a refrigerator compartment and a freezer compartment respectively(S114,S214), determining whether the accumulated operation time of the refrigerator compartment or the freezer compartment reaches a set time(S116,S216), and stopping operation of the refrigerator compartment or the freezer compartment and driving a heater of the refrigerator compartment or the freezer compartment if so(S118,S218), wherein a defrosting period of the refrigerator compartment is controller to be longer than that of the freezer compartment(S120,S220).
