A method and an apparatus for generating and playing a playback file are provided to easily upgrade a player without regeneration of the entire multimedia file by using a loader that is additionally included in the playback file having a player and positioning the player behind multimedia data. A method for generating and playing a playback file including multimedia data and a player comprises the steps of: successively storing a loader for driving the player, the multimedia data, and the player for playing the multimedia data and generating the playback file(540,550,560,570); and driving the player using the loader according to a command for the playback file, and playing the playback file by loading the multimedia data on the player.
