A process for producing a lithium/manganese composite oxide which is represented by the empirical formula (1): Li<SUB>1+x</SUB>(Mn<SUB>1-y-z</SUB>Fe<SUB>y</SUB>Ti<SUB>z</SUB>)<SUB>1-x</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> (wherein 0<x<1/3, 0=y=0.75, 0=z=0.75, and 0=y+z<1) and comprises a crystal phase of the layered rock-salt type. The process for lithium/manganese composite oxide production is characterized by comprising the steps of dissolving one or more manganese compounds, an iron compound, and a titanium compound in a solvent comprising water or a water/alcohol mixture in the same element ratio as in the empirical formula (1) to prepare a raw-material solution, making the solution alkaline to form a precipitate, subjecting the precipitate to a hydrothermal treatment together with an oxidizing agent and a water-soluble lithium compound under alkaline conditions, and then burning the product of the hydrothermal treatment in the presence of a lithium compound. It is further characterized in that the manganese compounds used as a raw material comprise a permanganate in an amount of 20 mol% or larger based on all the manganese compounds. Thus, a lithium/manganese composite oxide which is expected to be usable as a positive-electrode material substitute for a lithium/cobalt positive-electrode material can be produced. It has even higher charge/discharge performance. |
