The invention relates to a reformer for converting fuel and oxidant to re formate, said reformer comprising a reformer zone (12), to which fuel and a mixture of oxidant and at least partially oxidised fuel from an oxidation zo ne connected upstream can be supplied for catalytic conversion into the refo rmate. To improve the efficiency of the reforming process, the reformer zone (12) has a first catalytic reaction zone (32) and a second catalytic reacti on zone (48) in the direction of the gaseous stream, said zones being separa ted from one another by a non-catalytically active homogenisation zone (44) that is connected between them for homogenising the gaseous components emana ting from the first reaction zone (32). The embodiment according to the inve ntion permits a homogenisation of the gases after a first partial reforming process, said homogenisation leading to a more efficient second partial refo rming process.
