PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion device for a highway bridge capable of being constructed in small sizes with excellent construction work performance even if the expansion movement and the expansion spacing are large, and excellent in traveling performance, nonslip performance, anti-noise performance, cutoff performance, durability and the like. SOLUTION: A load-supporting plate 2 for supporting the weight of a rubber-like elastic body 1 for expansion is formed in a tapered shape. One or a plurality of spaces 7 are provided for absorbing a large expansion. In the case of a large deck slab spacing, a load-supporting plate of a flat plate shape or a circular, recessed or projected shape or other shapes is provided in the center of the bottom of the expansion device for reducing sizes. By employing the above construction, a large expansion movement can be absorbed, and the expansion device can be applied to a large deck slab spacing. Smooth traveling performance, anti-noise performance, nonslip performance, high cutoff performance, long durability, feasibility of construction and other functions are drastically improved.
