<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition that fulfills at least one of characteristics such as a high upper limit temperature and a low lower limit temperature of a nematic phase, a low viscosity, a large optical anisotropy, a negatively large dielectric anisotropy, a high specific resistance, high stability to ultraviolet light, high stability to heat and the like and to provide a liquid crystal display element comprising the composition such as an AM element or the like that has a short response time, a high voltage holding ratio, a high contrast ratio, a long lifetime and the like. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises as a first component a specific bicyclic compound having a phenylene in which two hydrogens are substituted (replaced) with fluorine and as a second component a specific tetracyclic compound having a phenylene in which one hydrogen is substituted with fluorine and has negative dielectric anisotropy.
