PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image reading method capable of decreasing the occurrence of misjudgment wherein a stripe image to be discriminated as an image of an original is discriminated as a stripe abnormity image. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus SC wherein an image of an original S carried on one principal side of a contact glass 27 moved in a subscanning direction is read from the other principal side of the contact glass 27 by reflected light of an exposure lamp 26 includes: a reference board 10 arranged opposed to one principal side of the contact glass 27 and extended in a main scanning direction; an abnormity discrimination section that discriminates whether or not abnormity exists in an image resulting from reading the original S on the basis of a highest density in the image of a prescribed region of the original S and a highest density in an image resulting from reading the reference board 10 in a state that the original S does not exists on the one principal side of the contact glass 27; and a read position setting section that revises an original read position P of the original S along the subscanning direction within a range readable of the reference board 10 when the presence of abnormity is discriminated.
