PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner in which a mode of illuminating a dust housing part housing dust is varied properly. SOLUTION: In the vacuum cleaner, the mode of illuminating a dust cup 11 which houses the dust sucked from a suction opening by operation of an electric blower 12 and whose inside is seen through, with a light-emitting diode 15 is controlled based on the state of the vacuum cleaner 12. The mode of illumination is controlled based on the presence/absence of illumination, a quantity of illumination light, an illumination hue, the way of illumination, etc. To put it concretely, the presence/absence of illumination with the light-emitting diode 15 is controlled according to whether the vacuum cleaner 12 is operated presently.
