<p>Electrodeionizer (1) comprising negative electrode (11) and positive electrode (12) and, interposed therebetween, alternately arranged concentrating compartments (15) and desalination compartments (16) provided by alternately disposing multiple anion exchange membranes (13) and cation exchange membranes (14), wherein each of the concentrating compartments (15) is fitted with bipolar membrane (20) to thereby partition the interior of the concentrating compartment (15) into a negative electrode side and a positive electrode side, and wherein each of the desalination compartments (16) is divided into at least two layers consisting of, from the upstream side in the direction of flow of water to be treated, first layer (16A) and second layer (16B) and is packed with ion exchanger (30) composed of anion exchanger (30A) and cation exchanger (30B) so that the ion exchanger (30) filling the first layer (16A) contains the cation exchanger (30B) in an amount of 50 vol.% or more while the ion exchanger (30) filling the second layer (16B) contains the anion exchanger (30A) in an amount of over 50 to 80 vol.%. Accordingly, the electrodeionizer can be stably operated for a prolonged period of time while preventing generation of scales in the concentrating compartments and desalination compartments.</p> |
