A paravane 14 for a marine seismic survey system includes a float 40 and at least one diverter 44 operatively coupled to the float. The diverter 44 is configured to redirect flow of water past the paravane with respect to a direction of motion of the paravane through water. The paravane 44 also includes a steering device, such as a rudder 46. The steering device is configured to controllably redirect the flow of water so as to control an amount of lateral force generated by the paravane. This affects the tension on the diverter tow rope and on a spreader cable to which streamers are coupled. The rudder may be rotated by a control unit 48 comprising a motor and worm gear. Alternatively the paravane may be steered by rotating the diverters 44 using a steering linkage coupled to the diverters (fig. 5) or by adjusting the relative lengths of fore and aft steering wires or bridle cables (fig. 3, fig. 6). A turbine generator 50 may be included to provide power for the control unit 48. |
