PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state imaging device and an imaging apparatus using the same in which the state of an electric charge discharged from a charge transfer unit to a drain region can be accurately recognized and appropriate overflow barrier potential can be easily set. SOLUTION: The solid-state imaging device 1 comprises: a plurality of photodetectors 2; a vertical CCD 3 and a horizontal CCD 4 for transferring signal charges read from the photodetectors 2; a barrier region 6 which is adjacent to the horizontal CCD 4 and in which only surplus charges of the horizontal CCD are passed; and a drain region 7 which is adjacent to the barrier region 6 and in which the surplus charges passed through the barrier region 6 are discharged. Such a solid-state imaging device 1 further comprises a detection unit 11 connected to the drain region 6. Variations of charges in the drain region 7 are detected by the detection unit 11. In accordance with the variations of charges detected by the detection unit 11, a barrier potential controller 30 connected to the detection unit 11 then regulates the potential of the barrier region 6.
