PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochemical display element stable for a long period of time that allows metal ions required for electrolytic precipitation to be sufficiently dissolved and present even when an organic ionic liquid is used as an electrolytic liquid of an electrolyte and that can suppress production of gas during use and increase in the inner pressure in the element. SOLUTION: The electrochemical display element comprises at least a pair of electrodes, an electrolyte containing metal ions disposed between the pair of electrodes, and metal ions present in the electrolyte and reduced to precipitate on one of the pair of electrodes, wherein the electrolyte contains an organic ionic liquid and the metal ion is a metal complex anion.
