The method involves monitoring liquid level of a fluid e.g. printing ink, using a sensor (4), where the fluid is supplied to a device (3) of the printing machine (14) by a supply device (15). The fluid is guided to the device (3) by a flow pump (12), and is guided from the device (3) by a return flow pump (13) of the supply device. The pump (13) is controlled based on results of the monitoring such that the level is brought to and held in an optimum value. The level is automatically brought from a minimum value (B) to the optimum value as a flow rate of the pump (13) is temporarily reduced.
