PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for quickly carrying out a centering process of logs. SOLUTION: In the case of a non-cylindrical log to be processed, the log 2 lifted to the vicinity of a temporary centering position Q via a support table 1 is rotated, according to a conventional method, while being held with a pair of right and left log rotating shafts 4, to measure the rocking angle of a plurality of detection members 9 provided movably, and the contour of the log 2 at a plurality of portions is calculated based on the measured rocking angle, to furthermore calculate a favorable turning core for the entire calculated contour. In case of a cylindrical log, the lifting distance of the support table 1 from a reference position to a measurement position and the rocking angle of the detection members 9 are measured at a measurement position in the midway lifting the log to the vicinity of the temporary centering position Q, and a residual required distance for the center shaft of the cylindrical log from the measurement position to the temporary centering position Q is calculated based on the measured lifting distance and the rocking angle, to furthermore lift the support table 1 by the required distance calculated from the measurement position, thereby automatically determining the favorable turning angle at the temporary centering position Q.
