PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent even the surfaces of tatami mats of Japanese-style rooms from being damaged while cleaning. SOLUTION: A self-propelling vacuum cleaner 1 is provided with a movable body, a moving means for moving the movable body on a floor surface, and a cleaning means for cleaning the floor surface. The cleaner is also provided with a floor selector switch 10 for selecting Tatami mat as the floor surface, a means for detecting the amount of light reflected from the floor surface, and a means for memorizing the time-series variation in the amount of light. When Tatami is selected by the floor selector switch 10 the cleaner detects the direction of the texture of Tatami by the time-series variation in the amount of light and moves based on the direction of the texture detected.
