PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accomplish accurate focus detection also in an off-axis area. SOLUTION: The focus detection apparatus 208 includes a first image-forming lens unit 213 including a first pair of lens portions 214b-1 and 214b-2 forming a first pair of images on a first pair of light-receiving element arrays 215b-1 and 215b-2 with luminous fluxes from an image pickup optical system 201a after the luminous fluxes pass through a first pair of apertures 212b-1 and 212b-2 making a pair in a first direction, and a second image-forming lens unit 213 including a second pair of lens portions 214b-3 and 214b-4 forming a second pair of images on a second pair of light-receiving element arrays 215b-3 and 215b-4 with luminous fluxes from the image-pickup optical system after the luminous fluxes pass through a second pair of apertures 212b-3 and 212b-4 making a pair in a second direction. A midpoint C between the second pair of lens portions is located between the first pair of lens portions and displaced from a midpoint B between the first pair of lens portions.
