PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality determining apparatus, capable of individually determining abnormality of each resolver by means of a threshold, taking into consideration the individual differences between respective resolvers, and of surely detecting an abnormal state where the output change in the resolver is minute. SOLUTION: The abnormality determining apparatus comprises: an interface 21 and an interface 22 for receiving a sine-wave signal and a cosine-wave signal which are generated, according to the rotation angle of a rotating body, by a rotation angle detecting device for detecting the rotation angle of the rotating body; a signal calculating circuit 23 for successively calculating respective sum of the squares of the sine-wave signal and cosine-wave signal received; a determining circuit 25 for determining whether the rotation angle detecting device is abnormal, based on the value calculated by the signal calculating circuit 23; and a memory 24 for storing each value of the sum of the squares as the threshold, based on the sine-wave signal and the cosine-wave signal that are received at a prescribed timing from the rotation angle detecting device. The deciding circuit 25 decides the rotation angle detecting device to be abnormal, when the difference between the value calculated by the signal calculating circuit 23 and the value stored in the memory 24 lies outside a prescribed range.
