PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Faraday rotator the light transmittance of which is improved while reducing its manufacturing cost and to provide an optical isolator. SOLUTION: The Faraday rotator 1 is manufactured by depositing an antireflection film 3 on two surfaces of a substrate 2 such as glass which are opposed to each other in parallel and depositing a magneto-optical film (for example, a Bi-substituted garnet film) 4 on each of the antireflection films 3 by an aerosol deposition method. An optical element for the polarization-dependent optical isolator is manufactured by arranging the Faraday rotator 1 between two sheets of polarizing glass 5 arranged oppositely so that the polarization axis of one of two sheets is deviated from that of the other by around 45°.
