PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescence element (hereinafter, to be described as an organic EL element), capable of preventing the passage of electron from a light-emitting layer to an electron transport layer for holes injected from a positive electrode, and of improving the light emission efficiency, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The organic EL element includes on a substrate a first electrode, the hole transport layer, the light-emitting layer, the electron transport layer, an electron injection layer, and a cathode. The electron transport layer contains at least one kind of either tin atoms and zinc atoms of≥10 ppm and≤1,000 ppm by the ratio of the number of metal atoms/the number of organic molecules. The organic EL element includes on the substrate: the first electrode, the hole transport layer, the light-emitting layer, then electron transport layer, the electron injection layer, and the cathode. The element is manufactured by laminating the first electrode, the hole transport layer, the light-emitting layer, the electron transport layer, the electron injection layer, and the cathode, on the substrate; subsequently laminating a layer containing the tin or zinc atoms; and performing annealing for not shorter than 30 minutes at a temperature of not lower than 70°C.
