PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer which can print images according to data for printing on both surfaces of a thermal paper quickly and in any of forward and reverse directions, and to provide its controlling method. SOLUTION: Thermal heads 2 and 4 in touch with a front surface 1a and a rear surface 1b of the thermal paper 1 are provided. At the same time, the data D0 for printing inputted from the outside is divided into first data D1 for printing and second data D2 for printing.
