PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure good fuel economy, by making an expansion ratio 20 or higher. SOLUTION: A variable compression ratio mechanism A which can change a mechanical compression ratio, and an actual compression action start timing changing means B which can change start timing of actual compression action, are provided. Closing timing of an intake valve 7 is controlled so that an intake air according to required loads is supplied into a combustion chamber 5, and the mechanical compression ratio is controlled so that pressure in the compression chamber 5 at the end of a compression stroke becomes an approximately constant regardless of engine load.
