Self-propelling construction machine and method for treating ground surfaces

The machine (1) has a milling roller (12) coupled with a drive motor (6) in a raised condition during a driving direction, where a direction of rotation of the roller corresponds to a direction of rotation of a driving mechanism (8). A monitoring device (14) monitors a distance of the roller to a ground surface (2), couples the roller and the driving mechanism by the drive motor and produces an alarm signal, when the monitoring device detects shortfall of the predetermined distance. An independent claim is also included for a method for working a ground surface.
