COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR TREATING MOTOR NEURON DISEASES

A method for treating motor neuron diseases is provided to improve clinical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) symptoms and show significant therapeutic effects by administering mesenchymal stem cells in combination with erythropoietin(EPO) to ALS animal models or patients. A method for treating a motor neuron disease comprises a step of administering erythropoietin(EPO) or an active fragment or analogue thereof and mesenchymal stem cells simultaneously or sequentially. In the method, the mesenchymal stem cells express positive cell surface markers including CD105(SH2), CD29, CD44, CD73 and CD166 to 90% or more and express negative cells surface markers including CD34, CD45, HLA-DR, CD1a, CD14, CD31 and CD80 to 10% and less. The motor neuron disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive bulbar palsy(PBP), primary lateral sclerosis(PLS), and progressive muscular atrophy(PMA). A composition for the treating a motor neuron disease comprises EPO or an active fragment or analogue thereof, and mesenchymal stem cells.
