The apparatus includes a housing 12 for mounting above a cooker 10. A fire extinguishing system is located inside the housing 12. The fire extinguishing system includes a reservoir of pressurised fire extinugishant and a nozzle 28 which is located in the housing 12 and which is directed towards the cooker 10. The system also includes a pressure activated valve which has an inlet in fluid communication with the reservoir and an outlet in fluid communication with the nozzle 28. A length of fusible tubing is connected to the valve. The fusible tubing contains a pressurised fluid which holds the valve closed, and the fusible tubing is designed to burst when exposed to temperatures exceeding a predetermined threshold temperature which is indicative of a fire on the cooker. This causes a sudden reduction in pressure holding the valve closed, whereupon the valve opens and extinugishant 70 is expelled through the nozzle towards the fire to extinguish the fire. The apparatus further comprises a protective cap covering the outlet nozzle which is blown off by the pressure of the extinguishant when the valve opens and a pressure switch for automatically shutting off the electricity and/or gas supply to the cooker. The apparatus is supplied as a kit of parts for installation within a housing mounted above the cooker. |
