A method (M1) for the production of iron oxide/iron hydroxide-containing weakly-basic anion exchange resins (I), involves (a) bringing weakly-basic anion exchange resin beads (II) made by the phthalimide process into contact with iron(II) or iron(III) salts in aqueous medium and (b) adjusting the resulting mixture to pH 2.5-12 by adding alkali or alkaline earth hydroxide and then isolating (I) by known methods. Independent claims are included for (1) iron oxide/hydroxide-containing weakly basic anion-exchange resin (I) obtained by M1 (2) a method (M2) for the adsorption of oxoanions from water or aqueous solutions by using (I), preferably from drinking water, water from effluents from the chemical industry or from garbage incinerators, pit water or water leaking from dumps (3) a method (M3) for regenerating (I) by treatment with alkaline sodium chloride solution .
