A method and an apparatus for transmitting/receiving data in a high rate packet data system are provided to improving a reception performance of a receiver by using a TDM(Time Division Multiple) pilot and a frequency domain pilot at the same time. A controller(1000) determines whether a CDM(Code Division Multiplex) signal, an OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) signal, or both of them is to be transmitted, and controls a multiplex(1002). The controller determines position information of a pilot and the number of pilots and supplies the result to a pilot tone inserter(1008). The controller controls an overall operation of a transmitter chain(1050). The interleaver(1018) interleaves encoded data, and the interleaved result is temporarily stored in a buffer(1016). A modulator(1012) receives a modulation order from the controller and modulates the data from a transmission block generator(1014). A guard tone inserter(1010) inserts a guard tone into a frequency domain signal.
