Disclosed is a driving aid system for vehicles consisting of a detection system, a positioning system and a processor for comparing the data from the detection system with the position data using stored profiles. The detection system senses the surroundings of the vehicle to obtain profiles of any objects close to the vehicle. The positioning system, such as a GPS system possibly enhanced by dead reckoning, provides a current position of the vehicle which is used to access stored profiles of objects for that location. The stored profiles are then compared to the detected profiles to determine the current position of the objects relative to the vehicle and to predict the future surroundings of the vehicle. The detection system may be able to determine if an object is a pedestrian or a vehicle and inform the driver if the pedestrian is in an unusual location. The system may store the frequency or intensity of moving objects and if a match to a stored object is found the stored profile is updated. The system may be able to identify complex traffic areas, such as junctions or intersections. The system may determine that a hazardous situation is or is about to happen and to activate a safety or warning system. |
