PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet generator capable of freely changing an ultraviolet generation amount, and of highly keeping ultraviolet generation efficiency. SOLUTION: This ultraviolet generator is composed by arranging a pair of electrodes 2, 2 in the circumference of a dielectric vessel 1 filled with an ultraviolet-permeable and gaseous medium, is provided with a power supply device 3 for applying a pulse voltage between the electrodes 2, 2, and is used for generating ultraviolet rays by applying the pulse voltage between the electrodes 2, 2 to generate discharge in the dielectric vessel 1.
