PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emergency stop device reduced in a moving stroke thereof and dimension over the whole, while securing the necessary braking force. SOLUTION: The emergency stop device 10 is provided with wedges 11, guide plates 12, elastic members 13, stoppers 124, upper end plates 14 and lower end plates 15. The wedges 11 are arranged to be paired on both side of a rail 3 laid out along a hoistway of the elevator, and formed into a saw teeth shape comprising a plurality of inclined surface 111 in a part thereof opposite to the rail 3. The guide plates 12 are arranged to be paired outside the wedges 11 on both sides of the rail 3, and respectively provided with a guide surface 121 in parallel with the inclined surfaces 111. The elastic member 13 is formed to go around the rail 3 from the outside of one of the guide plates 12 to the outside of the other thereof, and energize the guide plates 12 in directions for respectively pinching the rail 3.
