<p>A method for producing an optical fiber base material, which comprises a connecting step of connecting a dummy rod (3) to the end of a target formed with a quartz glass rod to be converted to an optical fiber base material through the deposition of fine glass particles thereon, to prepare a rod with a dummy, a working step of forming a taper section (10) wherein the diameter thereof on the dummy rod side is less than that on the target side, in the section of connecting a target (5) and a dummy rod being present on the chucking side in the treatment of working the rod with a dummy to convert it to a transparent glass, and a deposition step depositing fine glass particles on the perimeter portion of the glass rod with a dummy after the above working step in such a manner that glass particles cover the greater diameter side of the taper section (10), to prepare a soot.</p> |
