<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame-retardant composition from which harmful gas is not generated at combustion and a harmful material is not eluted at disposal, and which has both of excellent mechanical characteristics and high-degree flame retardancy exemplified by UL VW-1; and to provide an electric wire using the flame-retardant composition. <P>SOLUTION: The flame-retardant composition is obtained by compounding 100-200 pts.wt. metal hydrate and 75-150 pts.wt. melamine compound with 100 pts.wt. olefin polymer. Preferably, the olefin polymer comprises 90-100 wt.% ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and 0-10 wt.% polyolefin resin modified with an unsaturated carboxylic acid.
