PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for an input of an external position signal by generating a position signal acting like a reference of a read position synchronously with a line period. SOLUTION: This image reading apparatus for moving a light source and reading an image of an original by a CCD 27 includes: a motor drive clock generating section 37 for generating a motor drive clock to drive a motor for moving the light source; a timing generating section 33 that generates timing to generate the position signal acting like the reference of read operations relative to a CCD drive clock and the motor drive clock on the basis of the same clock generated by a clock generating section 36; and a reference signal generating section 34 for generating the position signal synchronously with the signal of the one line period on the basis of the timing generated by the timing generating section 33.
