PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a blast furnace with which desulfurization can efficiently be performed at a low cost without needing a new facility and device. SOLUTION: In the method for operating the blast furnace while injecting carbonaceous material from a tuyere, the carbonaceous material and MgO-containing material are mixed (desirably, after mixing the carbonaceous material and the MgO-containing material, the mixed material is pulverized) and injected from the tuyere.
