An apparatus and a method for controlling power of a mobile terminal are provided to extend a communication standby time of a mobile terminal and prevent introduction of noise to a different mobile terminal due to an unnecessary RF signal transmission. A GPS receiver(15) receives a GPS signal and obtains location information. A processor(14) outputs power control information based on a location factor indicating an RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indication) of an area corresponding to the obtained location information. A power management unit(13) controls power of a power amplifier and a transmission/reception unit of an RF module according to the power control information.
