Improvements in the production of acetone

Acetone is produced by passing a mixture of water vapour and acetylene at 40--500 DEG C. and normal pressure over a catalyst containing one part of ferric hydroxide prepared by precipitation and 3--6 parts of zinc oxide prepared by heating zinc carbonate, and, if desired, manganese hydroxide, in quantity 10--20 per cent of the mixture. The ingredients of the catalyst should not be heated above 600 DEG C. during their preparation. The catalyst may be prepared by adding ammonia to a dilute solution of ferric chloride with or without manganese sulphate, and adding the zinc oxide to the precipitate during the filtration, the mixture being dried at 110 DEG C. In examples, (1) acetylene and steam are passed through iron tubes heated to 400--500 DEG C. by a molten salt bath, the catalyst (zinc oxide and ferric hydroxide) being regenerated periodically by passing over air and steam at 400 DEG C. falling to 300 DEG C.: (2) in a similar operation the catalyst contains also manganese hydroxide.
