PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pharmaceutical composition and a method for controlling phosphate metabolism and metabolic acidosis in patients suffering from renal failure and associated hyperphosphatemia or patients predisposed to development of a hyperphosphatemic condition. SOLUTION: The pharmaceutical composition contains ferric citrate, ferric acetate or their combination. Therapeutic benefit can be realized by the method to administer the composition orally to a patient to be in contact with and bind the composition with ingested phosphate in the patient's digestive tract, and thereby prevent its intestinal absorption.
