An endoscope system has an endoscope (10) including a long insertion part (11); a medical instrument (50a, 50b) inserted into the channel of the insertion part (11) of the endoscope (10), the medical instrument (50a, 50b) having at its distal end a treatment part (5la, 51b) for performing various treatment in a body cavity and having inserted into it a long sheath (52a, 52b) that has a hard part (60a, 60b) with a predetermined flexibility and also has a soft part (61a, 61b) with a higher flexibility than the hard part (60a, 60b), the hard part and the soft part being serially arranged in that order from the distal end side; an operation instruction device capable of instructing operation of the medical instrument (50a, 50b); a first medical instrument drive device for operating the treatment part of the medical instrument; and a second medical instrument drive device for advancing and retreating the sheath of the medical instrument.
