A filter (10) removes harmful substances from air (18) in an enclosed space and has a container (12) with an inlet (14) and an outlet (16). The filter medium is a curtain of liquid grease (22) sustained by a rotor (26) powered by an electric motor (28) operating at normal speed. The motor is coupled to a horizontal paddle wheel (30) immediately overhead a pump (32) located within the liquid grease sump (22). The horizontal rotor and curved sidewall combine to generate a grease curtain (42) that drains down the container inner sidewalls (44) back into the grease sump (22).
