PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a visible light polarizer having a polarizing layer thickness in the range 10-40μm in which the silver particles have a surround index sufficiently removed from the blue polarizer region to allow good contrast, and to provide a method of manufacturing the visible light optical polarizer. SOLUTION: The method is provided for preparing visible light optical polarizer glass used for polarizing light having a wavelength in the range 380 to 700 nm, wherein the glass is made by using silver salt (non-halide silver salt) including no halide, and the method has a process of glass heat treatment and/or a step of reduction of silver ions in the glass prior to stretching to form an optical polarizer. The method can be used with any of halogenfree glass composition which allows the solution and existence of the non-halide silver salt as a silver oxide or silver (0) in the composition, or a glass composition of substantially halogenfree glass composition. The substantially halogenfree glass composition has halide, on a molar basis, 10% or less than the silver content. The method with which halogenfree salt and H<SB>2</SB>reduction are used is applicable to manufacturing a copper (0)-containing polarizer useful in a visible light red region.
