PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a personal authentication device reducing a load of authentication processing while ensuring safety. SOLUTION: This personal authentication device is provided with a determination index table 121, an area index table 122, and an authentication method selection part 103. The determination index table 121 stores an operation target requiring authentication of a user and determination information representing the degree of authentication required for the operation target in association with each other. The area index table 122 stores positional information uniquely identifying a place of the operation and position determination information representing the degree of authentication matching the place in association with each other. The authentication method selection part 103 acquires the determination information corresponding to the operation target of the operation carried out by the user from the determination index table 121, acquires the positional information from an external apparatus storing the positional information about the place of the operation, acquires the position determination information corresponding to the acquired positional information from the area index table 122, and based on a result of comparing the determination information and the position determination information, selects an authentication method for the user.
