PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic compound having a small electric activation energy and a conjugated structure which is excellent in stability. SOLUTION: This liquid crystalline styryl derivative is represented by general formula (1). In the general formula (1), R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>represent a same or different linear or branched alkyl group, an alkoxy group, cyano group, nitro group, F, -C(O)O(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-CH<SB>3</SB>, -C(O)-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-CH<SB>3</SB>, or general formula (2). In the general formula (2), R<SP>3</SP>represents a hydrogen atom or methyl group, B represents -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-, -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-O-, -CO-O-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-, -CO-O-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-O-, -C<SB>6</SB>H<SB>4</SB>-O-, or -CO-.
