A sensing arrangement for sensing a body part in a vehicle opening comprises a flexible seal member positioned adjacent to said opening with first and second separate electrically conductive members within. An oscillating signal with a modulation frequency is applied to one of said conductive members to generate an electric field in the opening. A varicap diode providing variable capacitance interconnects said first and second electrically conductive members and has a capacitance which varies at said modulation frequency of the oscillating signal. Detecting means detects a change in capacitance of said first and second conductive members when a body part is within the electric field and detects the modulation frequency to enable electrical continuity (breaks or defects) of said first and second conductive members to be determined. |
