A character input device of a portable electronic device and a method thereof are provided to enable a user to input characters by using the limited number of keys, thereby being applicable to the portable electronic device having the small number of keys. A key input unit(101) generates key data corresponding to inputted keys. A display(104) displays characters. A storage(103) matches the corresponding characters with a character code which is a combination of predetermined key data, and stores the matched characters. If the combination of the generated key data is identical with a preset character code, a controller(102) controls so that characters corresponding to the character code are displayed by the display. A combination of key symbols equivalent to the inputted keys is based on order of writing the displayed characters.
