A method and an apparatus for forming an image are provided to form an image only when expendable supplies such as a toner cartridge are authenticated using the serial number of the expendable supplies. A serial number is read from information on expendable supplies(214), and it is determined whether the read serial number corresponds to a predetermined serial number(216). When the read serial number corresponds to the predetermined serial number, it is determined whether the read serial number is a serial number of authorized supplies(222) and whether the authentication is the first authentication for the read serial number(224). When the authentication is the first authentication, an image is formed.
