A rack bar and cylinder assembly for preventing torsion of a rack bar is provided to form a guide groove and a guide jaw on the outer peripheral surface of the rack bar and the inner peripheral surface of a cylinder to prevent the torsion of the rack bar. A steering system includes a rack bar(115) linearly moved by the rotation of a pinion. A spline is formed on the outer peripheral surface of the rack bar. A spline is formed on the inner peripheral surface of a cylinder corresponding to the rack bar. The section of the cylinder, in which the spline is formed, has a reduced inner diameter so that the spline of the cylinder can be coupled to the spline of the rack bar. The surfaces of the splines are coated with a plastic or Teflon. The spline of the rack is slid along the spline of the cylinder.
