A character input device and a method therefor are provided to rearrange a keypad by allotting four characters at one button and to enable a user to input all characters through inputting once due to allotting 28 characters within 7 buttons, thus a user can more conveniently input characters by using one hand or thumbs of both hands. Plural input keys for inputting characters are disposed on a keypad. The input keys have 4 input contacts which output different key signals. Characters are individually allocated to every input contact, so that 4 characters or numbers can be inputted with one input key. The contacts are disposed in cross type or in X type within the input keys.
