PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generator capable of increasing the amount of ion supply by simply, efficiently and constantly supplying oxygen and steam to an ion generation device, and of extending the life of generated ions. SOLUTION: In this ion generator 1, a water tank system 3 composed by suspending water creatures 14 comprising photosynthesizing photosynthetic bacteria and algae such as blue-green algae in water 13 is combined with the ion generation device 2. The ion generation device 2 arranged in an airflow passage 6 for running an airflow in which the water creatures 14 are generated in the water tank system 3 and which contains oxygen and moisture increases the amount of either of positive and negative ions generated by discharge and the life of the ions can be extended by the action of water molecules. In the water tank system 3, a light source 15 comprising a fluorescent lamp, an LED lamp or solar light is installed, and, by adjusting the photosynthesis by adjusting its optical energy, the production volumes of oxygen and water can be controlled.
